Kentucky’s District Football Favorites

With District play underway in Kentucky, many races appear to indicate heavy favorites.

For instance, 2A-District 4 shows Lexington Christian and Washington Co. with the early lead, just a couple of weeks from their October 25 matchup on LCA’s campus.  CAL and Central are each off to a good start with 1-0 records in 3A-District 3, with the defending 3A champion Centurions likely to have the upper hand when they travel to the Yellowjackets on the 18th.

Franklin Co.’s easy 45-14 win last Friday at N. Oldham practically sets the Flyers on top in 4A-District 4.  That doesn’t eliminate the Mustangs from a first-round home game, provided they beat Western Hills and Spencer Co. later this month.  To the west, in 4A-District 3, DeSales is a half-game ahead of Doss for the top spot. Both teams will play to determine first place on the 25th.

S. Oldham’s upset win over Woodford Co. not only shows how competitive 5A-District 5 is, but it also puts the Dragons in a tie with Scott Co. for the lead at 2-0.  The Cardinals host S. Oldham this Friday with the winner to likely host a home playoff game.

As for 6A, Manual and Male each have a loss.  Both, however, are the teams to beat in their respective round-robin series before they face each other in “The Old Rivalry” on Nov. 1.

The Crimsons defeated St. Xavier last year. Their game this week on the Tigers’ field could not only determine who will likely finish first in 6A-District 3, but also make its own historical mark should Manual get back-to-back wins over St. X for the first time this century.  Over in District 4, while the Bulldogs are expected to finish 1st, expect tests from improved Fern Creek and 2022 Champion, Bullitt East.

District 5 could favor Trinity, with Oldham Co. a potential second-place finisher.   Over in District 6, the battle could be between Ryle and Great Crossing, with the Raiders hosting the Warhawks on the 18th.  While none of the Lexington-based teams in District 7 are making much of an impact thus far, Lafayette and Tates Creek next Friday could be the matchup with the most first-place implications.

As for District 8, Madison Central is the only team with just one loss as they host Frederick Douglass this week.  While this game could very much tell the tale of who comes out on top, don’t count out the Broncos’ neighborhood rivalry the week after against Bryan Station.  As was established last year and will be so again this time, it’s a matchup so good that it could only be played next Saturday the 19th, at noon here on GLICOD.
